What is audiovisual translation and what does it include?

Audiovisual translation is the translation of multimedia contenth, where image and sound form an inseparable whole. It includes working with subtitles, dubbing, voice-over (reading by a voice actor), transcription of recordings, and localisation of dialogue lists for movies, series, e-learning materials, and corporate content.

Unlike the standard workflow, text translation is only part of the job here. An audiovisual translator must consider synchronisation with picture, text length, time constraints, and cultural context – and not just the meaning of the text. Every form of audiovisual translation requires an excellent command of the target language, the target culture and the specific nature of the medium concerned.

Audiovisual translation with AI

We use advanced AI translation with post-editing and AI tools for transcription, generating subtitles, and voice-overs, which allows us to complete projects faster while maintaining the quality of a professional translation. Our language experts and localisation engineers always ensure the quality of the final result. This approach, combining the translator’s work with AI technology, sets us apart in the audiovisual translation market.

What does the process of professional audiovisual translation look like?

Every audiovisual translation project goes through a standardised translation process:

We evaluate the format, audio quality, the original material, the presence of a script, and the technical requirements of your target platform.

Transcription is the first and crucial step in the audiovisual translation process (when there is no prepared dialogue list). Without an accurate transcript of the original, it is impossible to prepare a faithful translation or professional subtitles. We offer different forms of transcription depending on the needs of the project:

  • basic transcription – converting audio or video content to text (speech-to-text),
  • detailed transcription – with division into individual speakers and with timestamps.

We provide transcriptions in both the source language and the target language. We use AI tools for automatic transcription (including Whisper, HappyScribe) – then we check the correctness of the generated text.

Transcription forms the basis for creating SRT, VTT, AVV, or ASS subtitles, where the text is divided according to subtitle display rules and synchronised with the picture.

Based on the transcription, we create and localize subtitles in popular formats:

  • SRT – SubRip Text,
  • VTT – Web Video Text Tracks,
  • AVV – Distribution Format Exchange Profile,
  • ASS – Advanced SubStation Alpha.

Subtitles displayed in the right place on the screen and at the right time are the foundation of professional audiovisual translation. Subtitles that are too long make it harder for the viewer to follow the content. That is why our experienced audiovisual translators translate content taking into account time constraints (subtitles) and synchronisation with picture (dubbing). Depending on the type of project, we adapt the content to the format and the viewer’s expectations.

The dialogue list translator adapts the text to the cultural context, technical constraints, and production style. This also includes translating movie titles – it is not just Polish translations of film titles that require creativity and knowledge of the market. Literal translation rarely works – you need a translation that builds viewer interest and reflects the character of the production.

We create subtitles for corporate, documentary, and feature films; subtitles for German, English, Russian, Asian, Arabic, and other foreign-language films. If you are looking for savings, we offer AI translation with post-editing.

Finished subtitles can, in turn, serve as a basis for dubbing and recording voice-overs – creating a coherent audiovisual production chain.

Voice-over translation is a form of audiovisual translation in which a voice actor reads the translation over the original soundtrack. This is a popular solution in Poland and is used, among other things, in documentary films, series, training and corporate materials.

Dubbing involves removing the original voice track and replacing it with a new version in the target language – synchronised with the picture and the pace of the speakers’ speech. It works especially well in animated films, children’s productions, and marketing materials, where the audience should not hear the original language. Modern AI tools also enable lip-sync, which allows for an effect similar to professional studio dubbing.

In both cases (voice-over and dubbing), we use AI technology – tools such as ElevenLabs or EaseUS – which enable fast generation of voice tracks in multiple languages. All material is then verified by our linguistic and subject matter experts, ensuring translation accuracy and a natural sound.

We verify translation correctness, terminology consistency, linguistic correctness, speech length, and sound and picture synchronisation. Automatic translations are always verified by a human. This gives you confidence that the finished material meets the highest standards.

You receive finished subtitle files (e.g., SRT, VTT), edited audio and video material ready for publication or video with permanently burned-in subtitles (burn-in), fully dubbed films, or material prepared for film distribution on streaming platforms.
